Tucked away in the heart of Studio City, Vivian’s Millennium Café has long been a beloved neighborhood haunt, known for its cozy outdoor patio, killer omelets, and signature pancakes that have earned it a loyal following—and dozens of glowing Yelp reviews.
But behind the sunny façade of scrambled eggs and mimosas lies a complex, storied history that few patrons realize when they stop in for breakfast.
Originally purchased in 1999 by George Marshall, step-father of actress Leah Remini, the café quickly became a family-run enterprise. The support of Remini, best known for her comical roles on The King of Queens and Kevin Can Wait, has always been more than just symbolic or financial, and the family-owned business continued in operation even after Remini’s recent divorce from the café’s co-owner, singer and musician Angelo Pagan.
Over the years, the café has grown into something of a local institution. Its inviting garden seating and hearty breakfast fare attract everyone from neighborhood regulars to out-of-town foodies—and yes, the occasional hopeful fan looking to catch a glimpse of Remini or another celebrity friend. While sightings are rare, the possibility only adds to the café’s laid-back Hollywood charm.
Recent years, however, haven’t been without challenges. Like many small businesses, Vivian’s Millennium Café took a major hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to public loan-tracking data, the café applied for financial assistance to stay afloat and worked tirelessly to avoid staff layoffs. Remini’s sister Shannon even stepped in to help, working tables during the most difficult months. Internally, though, tensions mounted. According to a complaint filed with the California Labor & Workforce Development Agency, a longtime employee alleged that the owners prohibited rest breaks and retaliated after she spoke up about working conditions.
Still, Vivian’s endures.
“We’ve always tried to make this a place where people feel welcome,” said one longtime employee who asked not to be named. “A lot of us are like family here. And I think people feel that when they come in.”
And come in, they do. On weekends, it’s not unusual to see a line out the door, with patrons eager for a taste of the café’s famous chorizo omelet or to sip coffee beneath the tree-lined patio umbrellas. For many, it’s more than just a meal—it’s a slice of Studio City life, served with a side of Hollywood history relayed by its on-site owner George Marshall.
So if you find yourself strolling through Ventura Boulevard on a sunny morning, don’t be surprised if Vivian’s Millennium Café catches your eye. Sit down, order the pancakes, and keep your camera handy. You never know who might show up.
