Urbanista went along to enjoy a Goodfellas prison dinner, a feast at Bitter Social.
Bitter Social is the latest hipster joint on the block, located within Liverpool’s oldest prison and Grade 2 listed building, The Bridewell. Originally constructed in 1857, the site was used as a Liverpool’s main lock up for 130 years. Tunnels still remain underneath the prison leading to the old courts at St. George’s Hall and to the docks. A place steeped in history, you might say! If you want to experience it you have to hurry, they’re only there until April!
The venue is really stunning, simple yet effective and full of character, with great views of the surrounding streets. Our table was right by the window so we had the views up Henry Street, a perfect setting for New year. The table designs made by local artist Neil Keating who also has a mural on Bold Street on the wall of the former Love Thy Neighbour.
A 4 course sharing menu was presented to us, starting with a favourite, Lobster Linguine, paired with a spiked Bellini. I find it so interesting that Lobster was once only served to poor people and prisoners, and these days we consider it a luxury. Each course was explained to us before we devoured it, it’s clear that the owners are a wealth of knowledge. All of the pairings were delicious and we truly felt a fine dining experience within the chic surroundings.

The owners David and Victoria are friendly and knowledgeable an nothing is too much trouble. A recommended place to visit, but as I said, be quick, you only have until April to get a Bitter Social fix.
