Across centuries, royal jewelry worn by men served purposes far beyond adornment. It was a visual language of authority, legitimacy, divine favor, and immense wealth. Kings, emperors, sultans, and maharajas used gemstones not merely for their beauty but for what they symbolized—power made tangible through rarity, origin, and scale. Advisors to royalty understood this well, and they were meticulous not only in selecting the finest gemstones but also in insisting on stones from origins that had already acquired legendary reputations. Over time, these preferences shaped global demand and elevated certain mines into near-mythical status. Prized Natural Creations Among the most…
Mark Wilson carries a history that makes for a great rock and roll biography. He started out by picking up his father’s guitar, but the path from those first few chords to the professional stage was anything but ordinary. After cutting his teeth in the Phoenix area, he found himself managed by a man who took the show on the road to state colleges with trained lion cubs sitting on the backline. That era of touring was about real presence and making an impression, and those years on the circuit clearly shaped the man behind the music today. Dreams Of…
The sphere of modern classical piano often feels divided between the overly technical and the purely ambient. It is a rare occurrence to find a project that bridges that gap with both intellectual rigor and deep emotional accessibility. Manuel Peguero achieves this balance in his fifth solo album, “Dark Piano Contemplations.” This beautiful collection of fourteen tracks serves as a milestone for the New Jersey-based pianist, marking a point in his career where his technical influences from the likes of Rachmaninoff meet a very specific, cinematic vision. The album is exquisite, not in a fragile or decorative sense, but in…

Kashmir blue sapphires occupy a near-mythical place in the world of gemstones. Their short-lived 19th-century mine production, the singular “velvety” cornflower-blue color and the tiny global supply of genuinely classic Kashmir material all combine to make any large, well-proven Kashmir stone an object of intense desire and close-scrutiny. At the center of current attention is The Spirit of Kashmir, officially recognized as the largest known Kashmir blue sapphire, and the growing chatter about a rival — the so-called Zanskar Crown Sapphire — which some sources claim may weigh well over 170 carats. THE SPIRIT OF KASHMIR The Spirit of Kashmir…
Your recent body of work marks a clear shift toward historical figures and abandoned locations. What led you to concentrate so strongly on memory and the passage of time? Time has always been present in my work, but now it has become explicit. I reached a point where reacting to the present felt insufficient. The present changes too quickly and often without consequence. Memory, instead, accumulates. Working with abandoned walls allowed me to deal with time in a physical way, not as an abstract concept but as something visible, cracked, and deteriorated. The title of your latest series, “…and we…
