Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Nevis, renowned award-winning artist Helen France MBE discovered her deep-seated passion for the arts, profoundly influenced by the vivid and dynamic scenery of her childhood.

Her lush garden, bursting with an array of colourful blooms and fragrant flora, served as a constant source of inspiration, motivating her to craft intricate artworks that incorporate natural pigments sourced from her surroundings.

Upon relocating to the UK, Helen encountered significant challenges during her time at art college, particularly as a woman of colour. However, she persevered and carved out a distinguished place for herself in the art world, producing striking paintings that celebrate the rich cultures of both the Caribbean and Yorkshire.

Her work often reflects the duality of her experiences, merging the vibrant spirit of her homeland with the unique characteristics of her new environment.

In addition to her impressive artistic practice, Helen has embraced a past mentorship role for emerging artists. She has in the past collaborated with a diverse range of organisations — including schools, theatres, universities, youth clubs, and galleries — dedicating her time and expertise to inspire and nurture the next generation of creators. Through these past partnerships, she fosters an environment of creativity and exploration.

Currently, Helen is immersed in an exciting new project titled “Aunt Dolly’s Claypot.” This collection tells the story of clay pots, an essential element of Caribbean culture, while honouring the profound influence of her Aunt Dolly on her artistic journey.

Through her work, Helen not only highlights the significance of preserving traditional craftsmanship but also pays tribute to the vibrant spirit of the Caribbean.

She firmly believes that “Art should be for everyone,” and each piece she creates aims to forge connections within communities, igniting inspiration and encouraging creativity in all who encounter her art.
