Helen France MBE is an award-winning artist dedicated to making art accessible to all. Her inspiring journey across the UK includes exhibitions and collaborations with educators, positively impacting countless lives.

As a proud member of the Caribbean Windrush Generation, she has transformed young people’s experiences through her work.

Her life, art culture and childhood inspired the enchanting YouTube animation ‘Helen and the Magical Bead Plant.’

    Q. What inspired you to combine Caribbean culture with animation for children?

    A. As an artist, I celebrate Caribbean culture through animation for young children. I aim to create a fun, family-friendly experience that resonates with children. Collaborating with talented animation scriptwriter, Dawn-Maria France helped bring my vision to life, crafting something special for all to enjoy.

    Q. How do you ensure the animation is educational and entertaining for children?

    A. The animation is crafted to uplift, teaching children that beauty exists around them.

    Q. Were there any challenges you faced in making a child-friendly animation that still honours the depth of Caribbean culture?

    A. We faced no real challenges alongside Dawn-Maria, a remarkable scriptwriter. We beautifully represented and honoured my Caribbean culture’s depth and rich diversity. The results shine brilliantly, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

    Q. Do you have a favourite traditional Caribbean story or song that would work well in a future animation?

    A. I aim to transform my cherished childhood memories into vibrant animations that captivate and inspire a new generation of children. Moving from oral storytelling to animation unlocks endless possibilities, allowing artists to share joy and creativity while touching young hearts. This pursuit brings me great happiness.

Q What advice would you give to young artists who are inspired by their culture and want to create something for children?

    A. Embracing diverse voices in animation is crucial for reflecting our cultures and experiences. I encourage young artists to use this powerful medium to share their stories and celebrate their heritage.
